Work Hard Now, Relax Later: Spring Checklist

Itโ€™s finally Spring, which means itโ€™s time to get your family and home ready for the warmer months! If you put a little work into your home now, you can relax once itโ€™s time to play this summer. Hereโ€™s Home Comfort Expertsโ€™ spring checklist to get you started off on the right track.

Filthy Furnace Filters Need to Go

Furnace filters are a great line of defense to keep your family breathing clean air. They screen out dust, pollen, and pollutants from the air before they have a chance to get inside your home. It is important to clean them or switch them out every couple of months depending on your specific needs. A clean filter will not only keep your air cleaner, it will also save you money by helping your system run more efficiently. A clogged filter can restrict the airflow, putting added strain on your HVAC systemโ€™s fan motor.ย If you're having other system problems take our quiz to see if you need a repair or replacement for your air conditioner or furnace.ย

Check and Change the Batteries

While youโ€™re spring-cleaning, donโ€™t forget to also change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Nearly two thirds of fire related deaths occur because homeownersโ€™ smoke detectors werenโ€™t working due to dead or missing batteries, or they didnโ€™t have any smoke detectors at all, according to the National Fire Protection Association. It is recommended that smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector batteries be changed at least once a year. And no matter what, donโ€™t ever take out the batteries to your smoke or carbon monoxide detectors. Thatโ€™s what leads to tragedies. Tune-up for a More Comfortable Season

This is also a great time to tune-up your air conditioner. Regular maintenance can keep your system working at peak efficiency. A system that has a yearly tune-up experiences considerably fewer breakdowns, saving you more money.

Check the Dampers in Your Ductwork

You may not know it, but there are dampers inside your ductwork that can help you control the amount of airflow to specific rooms. If you have rooms that get too hot in the summer or too cold in the winter, you can adjust these dampers to increase or decrease the airflow to those rooms. Now that you will be switching over to your air conditioner, you may need to make some seasonal adjustments. For instance, upstairs rooms may get too hot in the winter since heat rises, but they may need more airflow in the summer to keep them cool enough.
