With colder weather setting in, residents of northern Indiana and southwest Michigan are starting to look for cost-effective ways to improve the energy efficiency of their homes. With that in mind, here are a few easy ways to button up your home for the chilly weather ahead:

• If your home doesn’t have storm doors and windows, consider adding them. These added barriers against the cold and wind could increase the energy efficiency of your home by as much as 45 percent.
• Consider installing a programmable thermostat. This way, you can cut back on conditioned air use while you’re away without sacrificing comfort upon your return.
• Sealing air leaks around the house can improve energy efficiency by as much as 30 percent. Consider caulk and weatherstripping for common trouble spots, such as gaps where plumbing, wiring and ductwork pass through walls, floors and ceilings.
• Inadequate insulation can really put a strain on your comfort and a drain on your wallet. To make an immediate impact on the efficiency of your home, consider boosting insulation in the attic. You can also insulate around pipes and ductwork to prevent outside elements from affecting the temperature of your water and air.
• Before insulating around ducts, however, make sure that they have been properly sealed. Accessible ductwork can be addressed using mastic or metal tape, but sealing those hard-to-reach areas will require the assistance of a professional.
• Changing furnace filters gives your heating system an added boost. Clogged filters can restrict air flow, strain your system, compromise your comfort and drain your wallet of energy dollars. Start inspecting filters monthly, changing as needed (one to three months minimum).
• If you haven’t already, schedule preventive maintenance for your heating system. Routine maintenance keeps your system at its best, increasing your comfort while reducing your energy costs.
